Boatsetter Terminology: Boatsetter uses is as follows: When you take the boat out you “Check-In” to the rental. When you return the boat you “Check Out”
Seamanship and Boat Handling
From the time you leave the berth until you return, you are the Captain of this ship. You are expected to be able to handle a small motorboat with proficiency. As Captain, you are fully responsible for the boat until it is returned in the same condition you found it or you are relieved of it by an approved service provider. This responsibility extends to you even if there is a mechanical breakdown. See the section below on losing power.
Most of the rental fee is taken by Geico Insurance and then by the agent who will check you in and out of the boat. We want to spend the time with you to make sure that you are safe and comfortable in handling the boat but if there is more than 1 hour total time involved in assisting you with the rental we will ask you to pay for that extra time. This will allow us to keep our rates as low as we can while still helping out boaters that are a bit rusty or unfamiliar with the process.
TAKING THE BOAT OUT
Go to the tool shed up the driveway at 80 North water St. Inside on the left, pick up the red waterproof boat bag with boat keys and any more life-saving devices you may need. There are always three on the boat. The boat key is a two part device. A metal key and a black kill switch at either end of a red lanyard.
The boat is registration MS 2746 DS
It is the second one on the first finger pier.
ONLY TAKE LINES OFF OF THE BOAT. DO NOT UNTIE THE LINES FROM THE DOCK OR PILINGS.
1) To get into the boat from the bow you must put slack into the spring line by releasing only the hook that is in the middle of the rope. Once done you can now pull the boat closer to the floating dock.
2) Once on the boat turn on the boat battery by rotating the switch on the starboard side and lower the engine using the thumb switch on the throttle. If it is low tide do not lower all the way but be sure the engine is in the water. It is normal for some water to come into the boat from the stern scuppers. The boat has a self-bailing cockpit.
3) Uncover the Garmin and place the cover in the left dashboard hatch in front of the passenger seat. The Engine hours are listed under Nav. Charts -> My trips. (205 as of 8/2/22). These are required for the BoatSetter Check-in and out procedures.
4) Attach the cushions using the thumb snaps. The bow uses a webbing strap through the anchor padeye. New Cushions are only available in a set and cost $$$.
5) Secure your personal gear
6) Unclip the stern lines and secure on the pilings.
7) Place the key in the ignition and the black “Kill Switch” key (at the end of the red lanyard) under the black button. ENGINE WILL NOT START WITHOUT KILL SWITCH INSTALLED
8) Start the engine in neutral.
9) Unclip the remaining bowline and hold on to the neighbor boat. Unclip the starboard stern line with the hose.
DO NOT PUT THE ENGINE IN GEAR
It is way safer to simply pull yourself out of the slip.When you do go into gear use only brief spurts. You will need to go in and out of gear constantly- GO SUPER SLOW
Put the engine into gear by squeezing the throttle handle to undo the lock and gently putting the throttle forward. The boat will idle faster than you want to go so prepare to put it back into neutral.
All hands should be available to fend off and help you get the boat out of the slip. Carefully maneuver the boat out of the slip and then back to the wooden bulkhead behind the boat. Once the boat is pointed out to sea and clear of the pilings you can relax.
Once in the harbor turn left and motor towards the lighthouse. This is open water where you can familiarize yourself with the boat and how it operates. This is also a good time to get comfortable. Be sure to keep a weather eye out. There is a lot of boat traffic here.
If you lose power
1) Check the safety clip that allows the engine to run.
2) Do not abandon the ship or get off the boat
3) Prepare the anchor and set it when you are within 100 feet of the shore
4) Straighten the engine and raise it until foam rollers start to roll over
5) Do not allow the boat to drift onto the shore or rocks
6) Make your phone calls

7) Wait for assistance – do not get off of the boat – you are the captain until the boat is back in it’s slip or you are relieved by an approved service provider.
CROSSING THE FERRY: Do not cross the ferry until you see the ferries leaving their berths. Only cross once the ferries are entering their berths.
The speed limit within the harbor is 5mph and is strictly enforced.
Do not go north of Cape Pogue light.
Do not enter Calebs Pond
Anchoring in Cape Pogue is ONLY at the entrance on the west shore where the bottom is sandy. Keep an eye on the boat while anchored. changes in wind can move the boat. You should lay out at least a scope of 8 to 1. For 3 feet of water have 25 to 30 feet of line out.
Katama is tricky and shallow. Use the depth meter and mind the tides. A falling (ebbing) tide can leave you stranded. It is harder to see the channel when the sun starts to set.
Registration is in the locker in front of the helm station in a red plastic waterproof case. All safety gear is also in here.
GARMIN: Turn on using the far left switch. Press OK then Vessel to see your speed. Maps are also available. DO NOT ATTEMPT TO LEARN THE GARMIN WHILE UNDERWAY!!!!

RETURNING THE BOAT

Fuel is open when the Shell flag is up or Google for hours.
Take a picture of the fuel receipt and upload to the APP. Use the app for communications.
Bringing the boat in is much more difficult. You need to go VERY SLOW but also not let the wind or current grab you. Put the boat into neutral and get the speed down enough so it can be stopped by hand. We are talking a slow crawl. Aim the boat for the widest opening you can. Be aware of current and wind causing drift. When you can, put the boat into neutral and grab ahold of something and use that to pull the boat into the slip. The wooden bulkhead opposite the berths is a great place to stop and gather yourself and then pull yourself in.
YOU CAN NOT GO INTO THE BERTH UNDER POWER. THERE IS NOT ENOUGH ROOM. YOU MUST PULL YOURSELF INTO IT.
Securing the boat

Put the Starboard fender on the boat and clip it in place. The short part goes to stern.
Clip the starboard stern line to the forward part of the cleat bottom.
Place the port stern spring on the center post.
The bow lines cross to the far cleats. Attach to the lower aft part of the hole in the cleat.
The spring line clip goes onto the aft lower part of the starboard bow cleat
Remove all gear and do your final checklist
1) Straighten the engine and then raise it – stop raising when the Island Sports rack racks start to roll over
2) Turn off the battery
3) Cover the Garmin
4) Place the key back into the red bag.
Finally, when you are off the boat, pull the boat out by the srping line and clip the middle clip into the galvanized dock ring. The aft starboard corner of the boat should now be right at the piling and the bow about three feet from the dock.
Wash the boat with the available hose. We do not have people available to wash the boat.
Place the red bag with the key and any extra life jackets back into the toolshed to the left on the upper nails.
Dock Tie-Up Pictures
Observe how it is all set up beforehand. All the lines will stay on the dock.
The starboard spring line (on your left from the dock) gets released from the middle hook only. This will give you the slack you need to pull the boat to the dock. This is a 18′ slip and the boat is 16′ long so the spring line is essential to pull the boat back so that the starboard stern line and bumper will hang at the right spot.
Next, take the spring line off the starboard bow cleat and hook it onto the galvanized dock ring. The spring will now be tight and out of the water.
Now Load the boat, lower the engine and make all preparations for going to sea.
When all is ready start the engine and load the passengers
The Starboard Stern line unclips from the forward part of the aft cleat. All the clips and bumpers get clipped onto the spring as shown.
The Port Stern line gets unclipped from the post. Do not use the cleat. It is unconventional but works best.
The Bow Lines stay on the dock neatly
